Growing Thicker Hair.

After growing long hair, getting thicker hair is often the second hair goal for a lot of us. But what exactly is thicker hair?

Most people use the term thick hair when referring to having a lot of hair. There’s a misconception that the volume of your hair is tied to having thicker hair strands, the reality is that ‘thicker’ hair has more to do with how closely packed hair strands are rather than having thick individual strands.

Therefore to get hair that appears thicker, more hair strands need to be grown out, although in some cases, people just have finer hair, which appears to have fewer hair strands when that’s not necessarily the case.

The overall goal should be to grow and preserve as many hair strands on your scalp, giving your hair as much volume as can be achieved. There are 2 ways to do this:

Ensure your scalp is healthy.

A healthy scalp is vital for growing any hair at all; two factors that contribute to having a healthy are cleaning and moisturizing.

Cleaning your scalp (and hair) gets rid of product buildup that would otherwise clog your hair follicles, preventing hair growth. Using a gentle shampoo (sulfate, silicon and paraben free) ensures that your scalp is clean without stripping it of all moisture. This should be done once a week for those with curly hair.

Moisturizing your scalp is equally important, oils applied onto the scalp allow the hair to keep growing from the root as well as allowing new hair strands to grow. Pair coconut or olive oil with castor oil for your scalp. Coconut and castor oil seem to be the best for hair growth out of the oils that I have tried out. Coconut oil deeply moisturizes the scalp and also prevents itching, Olive oil does the same. Castor oil is known to be the best oil for promoting hair growth. Applying oil to your scalp can be done thrice a week or even nightly, You might want to wash your hair more than once if you pick the latter option.

Keep shedding to a minimum.

To see an overall increase of volume in your hair, not only is it important to grow your hair but to keep the new growth! Hair shedding can be caused by a number of factors but the most common include poor moisturizing of the hair itself & Aggressive styling.

Poor moisturizing of the hair in general; Dry hair often breaks not only at the ends but from the roots as well! Try using the L.O.C method to properly moisturize your hair.

Aggressive styling ;Excessive weaving and braiding WILL thin out your hair, keep weaving to a minimum or if possible avoid it completely by opting for wigs instead . As for braiding, braids are a great protective style but shouldn’t be kept in for more than 6 weeks, once they are taken out; give your hair a break of 4 weeks before protective styling again.
